Early user interfaces were designed with little or no consideration for the end user. This was largely due to technical and hardware limitations. The poor interface design required a specific skill set for users and limited the mass appeal of computers. Modern interfaces are much more user friendly. Interfaces play a pivotal role in our daily lives, as we interact with them on a regular basis. From the moment we wake up and check our smartphones, to using our computers at work, to interacting with various applications and websites throughout the day, we are constantly engaging with interfaces. In this paper, I will describe three interfaces that I interact with on a daily basis and analyze how well they adhere to Theo Mandel’s five golden rules of interface design. I will also suggest two changes for each interface to achieve a more user-friendly design and justify my suggestions.

The first interface that I interact with daily is the mobile banking application on my smartphone. This interface allows me to perform various banking transactions such as checking my account balances, transferring funds, and paying bills. In terms of adhering to Mandel’s golden rules, this interface does a fairly good job. The first rule is to strive for consistency, and this interface maintains a consistent layout and design throughout. The second rule is to enable frequent users to use shortcuts, and this interface allows me to save frequently performed transactions as shortcuts for easy access. The third rule is to provide informative feedback, and this interface provides real-time updates on the status of my transactions. However, there are two changes that could enhance the user-friendliness of this interface. Firstly, the font size could be increased to improve readability, especially for users with visual impairments. Secondly, the navigation could be simplified by grouping related functions together and providing clear labels for each section.

The second interface that I interact with daily is the email client on my computer. This interface allows me to send, receive, and manage my emails. In terms of adherence to Mandel’s golden rules, this interface could use some improvements. While it strives for consistency in terms of layout, it lacks consistency in terms of design across different operating systems. For example, the interface looks different on Windows and Mac, which can be confusing for users who switch between platforms. Additionally, the interface could provide better feedback when performing actions such as deleting or moving emails. For example, a confirmation dialog could be displayed to prevent accidental deletions. To achieve a more user-friendly design, two changes could be implemented. Firstly, the interface could allow for customization of the layout and design, so that users can personalize it according to their preferences. Secondly, keyboard shortcuts could be introduced to enable power users to perform actions more efficiently.

The third interface that I interact with daily is the social media platform Instagram. This interface allows me to share photos and videos, interact with others through likes and comments, and discover new content. In terms of adherence to Mandel’s golden rules, this interface does a good job overall. It maintains consistency in terms of layout and design throughout, and enables users to use shortcuts such as double-tapping to like a photo. However, there are still areas for improvement. The interface could provide better feedback when performing actions such as following or unfollowing someone, as the current design can be unclear. Additionally, the interface could introduce more accessibility features, such as alternative text for images, to cater to users with disabilities. To achieve a more user-friendly design, two changes could be made. Firstly, the interface could introduce a night mode option to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. Secondly, the interface could simplify the process of discovering new content by organizing it into categories or topics.

In conclusion, interfaces are an integral part of our daily lives and their design plays a crucial role in user satisfaction and usability. While the interfaces I interact with on a daily basis generally adhere to Mandel’s golden rules to some extent, there are still areas for improvement. By implementing changes such as increasing font size, simplifying navigation, providing better feedback, allowing customization, introducing keyboard shortcuts, and improving accessibility, these interfaces can become even more user-friendly and enhance the overall user experience.
