Introduction

The purpose of this study is to better understand the impact of social media on academic performance among college students. The goal is to determine whether the use of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, has any significant effects on students’ grades and overall academic success. This research is important because of the increasing prevalence of social media use among young adults and the potential implications it may have on their educational outcomes.

Problem

The problem that this research addresses is the potential distraction and time spent on social media platforms by college students, which may negatively affect their ability to focus on their academic responsibilities. The scope of this study is specific to college students, as they are a demographic that heavily engages with social media. The main claim or argument of this research is that excessive use of social media negatively impacts students’ academic performance.

Method

To conduct this research, a mixed-methods approach was used. A survey questionnaire was distributed electronically to a sample of college students, asking about their social media habits, study habits, and overall academic performance. Additionally, focus group interviews were conducted with a select group of students to gain further insights into their experiences and opinions regarding the impact of social media on their academic performance. The variables of interest included the frequency and duration of social media use, GPA, study hours, and perceived academic performance.

The evidence to support the claim was gathered through statistical analysis of the survey responses and thematic analysis of the focus group interviews. The most important sources in this study include academic articles, previous research studies, and theoretical frameworks related to the topic of social media and academic performance.

Results

The findings of this study indicate a significant negative correlation between the frequency and duration of social media use and students’ GPA and perceived academic performance. The hypothesis that excessive use of social media negatively impacts academic performance was supported. The general findings suggest that students who spend more time on social media platforms tend to have lower GPA scores and less study time compared to those who use social media less frequently.

Conclusion

The implications of this research are that excessive use of social media can have a detrimental effect on college students’ academic performance. It is recommended that students be mindful of their social media habits and find ways to manage their time effectively to strike a balance between social media use and academic responsibilities. The results of this study are specific to college students and may not be generalizable to other populations.
