1. Introduction:
Social media has become an integral part of the lives of adolescents, with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat offering new ways of communication and self-expression. However, concerns have been raised about the potential negative impact of social media on adolescent mental health. This research paper aims to explore and compare the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents, and understand the underlying mechanisms influencing this relationship.

2. Purpose of the Project:
The purpose of this project is to examine the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents. By comparing different aspects of social media use (frequency, types of content consumed, interaction with peers, etc.), the project seeks to identify potential risk factors and protective factors associated with social media use among adolescents.

3. Background of the Topic:
1. Numerous studies have found a significant relationship between excessive social media use and poor mental health outcomes among adolescents (Jones et al., 2017; Smith et al., 2018).
2. Social media platforms have been found to contribute to the development of psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression (Montag et al., 2020).
3. Cyberbullying and online harassment, which are common on social media platforms, have been linked to negative mental health outcomes among adolescents (Patchin et al., 2019).
4. However, not all research supports the notion that social media use is always detrimental to mental health, highlighting the complex nature of this relationship (Bányai et al., 2020).
5. Some studies have even shown positive effects of social media use on mental health, such as increased social support and self-esteem (Ferguson et al., 2021).

4. Selected Methodology and Design:
For this project, a mixed-methods approach will be employed to collect and analyze data. First, quantitative surveys will be administered to a sample of adolescents to measure their social media use, mental health symptoms, and perceived social support. Second, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of participants to gain deeper insights into their experiences with social media and mental health. The collected data will be analyzed using statistical techniques and thematic analysis, respectively.

5. Overarching Question:
How does social media use impact the mental health of adolescents, and what factors mediate or moderate this relationship?

In conclusion, this research project aims to contribute to our understanding of the complex relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health. Through a comparative study, the potential risk factors and protective factors associated with social media use will be identified. By utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of this important topic.
